Belfast Titanic Hotel gets lottery funding

A new luxury Titanic hotel looks set to be created in Belfast after it was awarded lottery funding.
Based around the derelict Harland and Wolff Drawing Offices where the ship was designed, the new four-star hotel has taken a step closer to becoming a reality after it was handed a £4.9 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s (HLF) Heritage Enterprise programme.
The award, which is given to help repair historic buildings that need significant restoration, means that The Titanic Foundation Ltd can move ahead with its plans which could result in over 100 local roles being created including many new hospitality and catering jobs.
The B+ listed building, based on Queen’s Island, has been vacant since 1989 and considered ‘at risk’ for much of the past decade, but was previously home for the designers who created over 1,000 ships including the White Star Olympic Class Liners and the HMS Belfast.
Much of the funding will be used to develop the two drawing offices into spaces for public use, while the hotel is set to feature 84 bedrooms and will focus on authentic spaces such as its board room, telephony room and entrance.
Speaking about the plans, Paul Mullan, Head of HLF Northern Ireland, said: “This is an exciting project that will see one of Belfast’s most historic buildings reborn as a major tourist destination. This, like many of the city’s historic buildings, has incredible potential to act as a driver of regeneration and economic growth.”
Also making the news recently was the Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire, which announced that it had appointed James Duggan as its new Executive Chef.
Duggan will take over the kitchen from Cyrille Pannier, who is set to head to Beverley Hills to work at the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles.
After spending his early career as Demi Chef de Partie at the Hampshire Hotel, Duggan went on to work with the likes of Richard Corrigan, John Burton Race and Matthew Harris before securing Michelin stars at 36 on the Quay.
