Caring tops hospitality rich list

Richard Caring has been revealed as the UK’s richest restaurateur in a new list.

The owner of The Ivy and Annabel’s nightclub, Caring is said to be worth around £800 million, which was good enough for joint 125th place on the Sunday Times’ Rich List 2014. However, much of Caring’s recent income is a result of property rather than hospitality, with the sale of his stake in Camden Stables Market thought to have earned him £100 million.

Behind him was Trust Inns owner Trevor Hemmings, whose estate of 500 pubs placed him 164th on the list with £625 million, while Marlon Abela, owner of the Greenhouse restaurant in London, took 290th place with £325 million.

Further down the list, Adam, Samuel and Jonathan Kaye and family amassed £320 million through founding the Ask, Zizzi and Prezzo chains, while Wetherspoons founder Tim Martin has made a fortune of £305 million from the 900 pubs.

Robert Earl, owner of the Buca di Beppo restaurants took joint 330th place with £280 million, with Hugh Osmond, founder of Punch Taverns, in joint 367th place with £250 million.

Jamie and Jools Oliver earned an estimated £90 million last year to take their fortune to £240 million, with the TV chef selling ten million cookbooks, which generated £126 million alone. He has also boosted his wealth through endless Sainsbury’s adverts and the Jamie’s Italian restaurants.

Meanwhile, Nigel Wray took 402nd place with £236 million after selling £144 million of Domino’s Pizza shares last year, while Julian Metcalfe, co-founder of Pret A Manger and owner of the Itsu sushi bars, ranked in joint 647th with £140 million.

In other hospitality and catering news, the Noma restaurant announced last week that it is to temporarily relocate to Japan at the beginning of next year.

Set to be open from 9th to 31st January, the Copenhagen restaurant’s new home will be in the Mandarin Hotel with all current staff expected to move to Tokyo for the opening.

The original Noma was recently voted the best restaurant in the world by S.Pellegrino after taking top spot in 2010, 2011 and 2012 before slipping to second place last year.
