Jersey restaurant appoints Michelin-starred chef

A chef who won a Michelin star aged just 24 has been recruited to fill a high profile catering job at an established restaurant in Jersey.

Stephen Smith joined the Bohemia restaurant as head chef last month after earning a Michelin star at the Gordleton Mill in Hampshire.

Prior to this, Smith worked in various catering jobs alongside renowned chefs including Jean-Christophe Novelli, as well as Paul Heathcote at the two Michelin star Heathcote’s Restaurant.

Commenting on the appointment, Bohemia and The Club Hotel and Spa’s owner, Lawrence Huggler, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Stephen to Jersey and Bohemia, having been lucky enough to sample his amazing food with constantly evolving and changing menus. Having had a chance to talk to him and understand his approach to food we are very excited about this new chapter for Bohemia.”

Smith’s previous experience has also seen him spend time working in catering jobs at restaurants such as The Burlington at The Devonshire Arms Country House Hotel and Spa in Yorkshire and Quaglinos and Rhodes in the Square in London.

Further afield, Smith also spent two years as head chef at The Restaurant in Melbourne, Australia, where he was awarded with the country’s equivalent of two Michelin stars.

His new role will see him head up the kitchen at Bohemia which offers an exclusive chef’s table, allowing diners to experience a ‘behind the scenes’ experience.

Smith said of his new role: “I am really excited about immersing myself in the fantastic local produce Jersey has on offer and bringing my own personal style and menu design to Bohemia and Jersey.”

He added that he had visited the island three times before agreeing to head up the restaurant and had met local producers and suppliers in order to gain an understanding of the ingredients available to him on the island.
