Manchester gets new Aumbry pop-up restaurant

Manchester’s fine dining scene is set to receive another boost in the next few months with a new pop-up restaurant from the Head Chef behind Aumbry.

Following on from the opening of Simon Rogan’s The French and Aiden Byrne’s Manchester House last year, Mary-Ellen McTague, who has featured on TV’s Great British Menu, is set to temporarily set up a brand new restaurant in the city’s Northern Quarter.

Her current base, Aumbry in Prestwich, is to close for refurbishment and a kitchen extension from Saturday 30th August, with McTague moving her staff to Manchester for a five week period.

Named 4244 Edge St, the new restaurant will be open from Tuesday 23rd September with bookings being taken from Monday 1st September.

On the menu for the 50 diners will be a five course tasting menu including dishes such as sautéed mushrooms and snails, tomato consommé, slow cooked Cumbrian beef and macerated Scottish strawberries, while the vegetarian version features roast celeriac, butter pie and grapefruit posset.

Also opening a new restaurant is Rick Stein who announced this week that he is to launch his first base outside Cornwall. Named after the celebrity Chef, the new restaurant will open in Winchester high street in late autumn and seat 70 customers for lunch and dinner.

Stein’s middle son Jack will be the restaurant’s Executive Chef and oversee the menu which will include grilled lobster, turbot hollandaise and slip sole meunière, as well as dishes inspired by the TV Chef’s travels around the globe.

Before the new eatery can open, refurbishments will take place with eldest son Edward and Business Partner Jill Stein working together to turn it into a relaxed area with a coastal feel.

The restaurant follows on from Stein’s bases in Padstow, Falmouth and St Merryn, while he has also launched cookery schools and accommodation.
