New list unveils the north’s hospitality and catering stars

A new list has identified the best employees currently working in hospitality and catering jobs in the north of England.

The Northern Restaurant and Bar (NBR)’s Top 50 awards were unveiled this week as part of the show’s return to the Manchester Central venue for its 2013 event.

The final fifty were chosen by a panel of experts from the Russell Partnership, which had the task of selecting the 50 most innovative and successful hospitality operators and workers currently based in establishments in the north west, north east, Yorkshire and the Humber.

Among the criteria that the panel looked for were the creation of new hospitality and catering jobs, training and investment, and the ability to drive commercial and critical success.

Alongside the top 50, the NBR also awarded three special achievement winners in honour of their “exceptional accomplishments”.

Given the honour were Carlo and Marcello Distefano from the San Carlo Group for exporting the restaurants around the world, Simon Rogan from L’Enclume for achieving a second Michelin star and scoring a 10 / 10 rating from the Good Food Guide, and Stephen Miles from Radisson Blu Edwardian Manchester for maintaining the establishment’s standards and founding the £30 million Hotel Future training school in Oldham.

Commenting on the awards, Thom Hetherington, managing director of Northern Restaurant & Bar, said: “Many congratulations to our three special achievement winners and the NRB Top 50 victors who have worked tirelessly to push boundaries and excel in their respective trades.

“This stellar line-up of restaurateurs, chefs, bartenders, entrepreneurs and business owners has helped to shape our region’s hospitality landscape, making it profitable, sustainable and visionary. I’d like to thank all those who entered this year’s awards – the standard was exceptionally high – and we look forward to hosting the third NRB Top 50 in 2014.”
