New Spitalfields restaurant for Nuno Mendes

Portuguese Chef Nuno Mendes has announced plans to take on a new restaurant based in Old Spitalfields Market.
The Chef, who became famous in London for serving all manner of celebrities as the Executive Chef at the Chiltern Firehouse, won a Michelin star at Viajante, which served up various experimental dishes before closing last spring.
The new restaurant will take on a more informal tone and will serve food all day long with a menu consisting mainly of Portuguese produce and wine.
Hosting around 40 diners at a time, Taberna do Mercado is set to begin with a soft opening between May 4th to 10th where customers can take advantage of reduced prices, while online bookings are due to be taken from April 29th.
Mendes had been in charge of the kitchen at Viajante since it opened in 2010 and oversaw its Michelin win. The restaurant has since morphed into the Typing Room with Jason Atherton backing the project and installing Lee Westcott as its Executive Chef.
The restaurant, set in Bethnal Green’s Town Hall Hotel, serves a contemporary menu of European cuisine.
Westcott previously worked alongside Atherton at 22 Ships, while he has also shared the kitchen with Tom Aitken at his Chelsea restaurant and spent time at the three Michelin-starred Per Se, Noma and Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s.
Ramsay has also had a busy few weeks after announcing that he will open a new restaurant at a five-star hotel in Bordeaux. The fine dining Le Pressoir d’Argent, based at the Grand Hôtel de Bordeaux & Spa, has been taken over by the Gordon Ramsay Group as part of its French partnership with the FIB Group (Financière Immobilière Bordelaise).
The celebrity Chef is now set to create a brand new menu that will focus on local seasonal ingredients with pairings to regional wines.
The Bordeaux restaurant adds to Ramsay’s long list of other eateries which include the three Michelin starred Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in London, as well as Petrus, Murano, The Savoy Grill and Maze.
