Simon Rimmer set to “market” Bolton

Celebrity chef Simon Rimmer is set to add to his growing workload in the coming months by becoming the new ambassador for Bolton Market.

Owner of the vegetarian restaurant Greens in West Didsbury and Earle in Hale, Rimmer is also the co-host of Sunday Brunch on Channel 4 and has now taken on the task of promoting one of Britain’s oldest markets.

Currently undergoing a £4.5 million refurbishment, Bolton Market was crowned the Best Food Market at the BBC Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards in 2011 and is set to be the home of various fresh fruit, veg and other food stalls when its new lifestyle hall reopens on Friday 14th February.

The hall is expected to form the centrepiece of the market and has been decked out with a modern layout featuring a central food court area, as well as a variety of traders including Great Ale Year Round and The Coffee Grind.

Commenting on the market, Rimmer said: “I’m a massive advocate of fresh, local produce and passionate about shopping local so I was more than happy to become Bolton Market’s ambassador.

“Bolton is very fortunate in that it has a fantastic market, and I wanted to get involved in promoting what really is the jewel in Bolton’s crown.”

He added that he hoped to entice more younger people into the market and help to change the perception that only older shoppers frequent the stalls.

Rimmer is expected to use his 20 years of experience working in various chefs jobs to advise traders about how they can make the most of the environment, while he is also set to host a series of masterclasses.

From the end of February, the market will also be home to a new outdoor market which is set to move from its previous location on New Street to the opposite side of the building.
