The Restaurant Group sees strong start to 2013

Restaurant and pub owner The Restaurant Group (TRG) has seen a positive start to the year, it has been revealed.

TRG, which operates 422 restaurants across the country including Frankie & Benny’s, Chiquito and Garfunkel’s and employs thousands of people in hospitality and catering jobs, has seen like-for-like sales increase annually by 6.5 per cent in the first eight weeks of 2013.

The company’s annual figures for 2012 also showed that revenue increased by nine per cent last year to reach 533 million, which was a 4.5 per cent like-for-like rise, while adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) increased annually by 6.5 per cent to £95.5 million.

Last year proved to be a busy period for TRG with the company opening 28 new sites and creating more than 700 new jobs in catering and hospitality. A further 28 to 35 new restaurants have also been targeted to open this year potentially leading to many more jobs in the sector.

Commenting on the annual figures, TRG’s chairman Alan Jackson said: “Although conditions for consumer-facing businesses were again tough in 2012, our consistent focus on our customers, standards of service and value for money meant that the group has once again delivered a record level of profits and earnings.

“Our new development activity was busier than the previous year and, having opened eight new restaurants by the end of the first half, we saw a significant increase in pace during the second half, opening a further 20 new sites. Much of this development took place in the final eight weeks of the year when we opened 12 new restaurants. We are very pleased with the performance of our new restaurants and we are confident that they are set to deliver superb returns.”

Jackson also revealed that Trish Corzine, executive director of concessions, and Robert Morgan, company secretary, will be leaving their jobs at TRG in 2013 after spending several years working at the company.
